Choose who needs an independent connection

Start with how your family will move around Japan. One adult can share a phone's connection with nearby devices through a personal hotspot, but those devices need to stay within its working range. That arrangement can suit a family that stays together. It becomes less practical when one parent takes a child back to the hotel while the other continues sightseeing.

If two adults regularly separate, compare a plan for each adult with the shared option. Independent connections let each person use maps and messages without depending on the other phone. Children do not automatically need their own plan; decide whether their devices need internet away from a parent.

Check the exact phone and its carrier lock

Before buying, confirm that the intended phone supports the provider's eSIM and is carrier unlocked. These are separate checks. A phone can have eSIM capability while still restricting service from another provider. Check the exact model and regional version against official compatibility guidance rather than relying only on the model family's name.

Airalo's installation guidance requires an eSIM-compatible, network-unlocked device. Ubigi also provides compatibility and unlocking guidance. If your current carrier needs to unlock the phone, resolve that before purchase. For two adults using separate plans, complete the check on both devices and confirm which phone will receive each eSIM.

Verify hotspot support before relying on it

Airalo says personal hotspot use depends on support from both the device and the network. Its instructions also explain that a required APN may need to be entered in the hotspot settings. Ubigi publishes its own tethering instructions. Use the instructions for your phone and selected service; do not assume that an eSIM installation alone confirms working data sharing.

After the plan is active, test a second device on the hotspot before depending on it for tickets or navigation. Save the hotspot password on the family devices that will use it. Plan how to keep the sharing phone charged, and carry an appropriate power bank if needed. A flat battery removes everyone's shared connection.

Match data and validity to the whole trip

List the activities that need mobile data: maps, messaging, ticket downloads, video calls, photo uploads and entertainment. A shared plan serves all connected devices, so consider their combined use. Download entertainment and save essential booking details over Wi-Fi when practical. Keep offline copies of the hotel address and the family's meeting plan.

Compare the live package's allowance, coverage, validity and any speed or fair-use conditions. Check whether additional data can be purchased for that specific package and what happens when its allowance ends. Include the arrival and departure days in your needs. A low headline price tells you little if the package stops covering your trip.

Separate installation from the start of validity

Read the activation policy before installing. Airalo explains that some packages start their validity when connected to a supported network, while others start at installation. Ubigi describes its SmartStart activation process in its official help. Check the selected package's current instructions, including any deadline for first use, instead of applying one provider's rule to another.

Use a stable internet connection for installation and keep the instructions accessible. Follow the provider's settings for the travel data line, including any required roaming setting. Review your home line separately with your carrier. Keep the plan name, purchase record and support details so you can identify the correct service if setup needs help.

Check calls and SMS as separate features

A data connection does not by itself include ordinary phone calls, SMS or a Japanese phone number. Airalo's help distinguishes data-only plans from plans with voice and text. Ubigi describes its service as data only. Read the exact plan type before paying, particularly if a reservation or account needs a phone call or text verification.

Internet messaging and calling apps can use data, but they do not replace every SMS or telephone requirement. Set up the apps you expect to use before departure. If you keep your home line available for calls or SMS, confirm its overseas settings and charges with your own carrier.

Compare the actual plans

Use Airalo's Japan catalogue and Ubigi's official plan finder to compare packages that meet the same needs. Check the final terms again when dates or devices change. Choose the arrangement that supports your family routine and leaves you comfortable with its setup.

  • Each intended phone is compatible and unlocked.
  • Hotspot support and setup are confirmed for the shared option.
  • Both adults can connect independently when they need to separate.
  • Data, activation, validity, voice and SMS match the intended use.
